Fixing a Failed DIY Tub Coating the Right Way

DIY bathroom coating kits are tempting. They're cheap, they're at every hardware store, and they make it look easy. But here's the reality - most of them fail. The coating peels, patches, and flakes, and now you've got a bigger mess than what you started with. That's exactly the situation we walked into on this one.

What we were working with was a tub and shower surround that had a failed DIY coating applied over it. Peeling spots, uneven patches, bare substrate showing through - the kind of thing that can't just be painted over again. The only real fix is to strip it back down and start clean. So that's what we did.

We stripped the old coating, prepped the surface the right way, and applied a fresh professional refinish to both the tub basin and the shower surround walls. Proper prep is everything in this trade. If the surface underneath isn't clean, smooth, and properly etched, the new coating won't bond - and you end up right back where you started. We don't skip steps.

The finish we ended up with is bright white, smooth edge to edge, and built to hold up to daily use. The whole unit looks like it belongs in a move-in-ready home - not a bathroom that had a coating failure. That's the difference between a professional tub refinish and a hardware store patch kit.

Failed coatings are one of the more common calls we get, and honestly, they're fixable. It just has to be done correctly the second time around. If you're dealing with a peeling or failing tub coating - whether it's a DIY job or a previous refinish that didn't hold - we can sort it out.
