A lot of homeowners look at a beat-up tub and immediately think they need to gut the whole thing. Demo the surround, haul out the cast iron, bring in a new unit. It sounds straightforward until you start adding up the cost - and the mess - and the days without a working bathroom. That's where refinishing changes the math entirely.

Here's what we were working with on this one. A cast iron tub sitting in an otherwise updated bathroom - fresh white subway tile, new flooring, updated fixtures. The tub itself was worn down, stained, and covered in surface damage. The kind of thing that pulls the whole room backward no matter how nice everything else looks.

We masked off the entire area, cleaned and prepped the surface thoroughly, and applied a fresh coat of reglazing material right over the existing cast iron. No jackhammer. No dumpster. No structural work. Just careful prep and a clean, glossy white finish that matches the updated space around it.

The result is a tub that looks like it belongs in the room - bright white, smooth, and finished to a high gloss. That's the thing about tub refinishing done right. When the prep work is solid and the application is clean, you end up with a surface that holds up and actually looks like a new tub rather than a painted one.

Cast iron tubs are worth keeping. They're heavy, durable, and built better than most modern replacements. If yours is dragging the room down, refinishing is almost always the smarter call before you go anywhere near a demo crew.
